it is raining today - much like any february day in alabama. the rain hits the window pane just over my left shoulder. i type and listen, it sounds comforting - these last weeks of winter. wet, gray, dull and mostly lifeless. the grass is dull and the trees that haven't shed their leaves, hang on to brittle brown skeletons of last year's glory. but...as the wind blows, the thunder blusters and the rain falls ... this is the time of year that my spirit begins to sigh and whisper - spring is coming, spring is coming. i pay no attention to groundhog's day - his shadow doesn't seem to work the same way here. i pay no attention to valentine's day - it holds no meaning for me. what matters is that february is the month when the seasons begin to turn the corner. next month comes the beginnings of the earth returning to life - the grass begins to grow, the birds nest, the flowers begin their budding, and the air takes on that magical, pure, spring quality where all possibilities abound. much like this magical wisteria - it will surround me and intoxicate me. i await and abide....spring is coming.
You "abide" so poetically too! The wind is blowing and it's cold. And I'm sick and tired of looking outside and seeing things brown and fallen over. I want some spring greens too!

So absolutely true Char. I've been thinking the same and am feeling so glad that spring really is just around the corner for us.
ReplyDeletethis is my all time favorite char .. i am with you word for word ...sigh for sigh ..its coming !!!
ReplyDeleteI love this Char...and yes, it's coming. Your writing lately...profound and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWinter blues affecting you too huh?
ReplyDeleteI am so ready to get my hands in
the soil and get some flowers growing!
I'm originally from Georgia and am such a fan of Wisteria. I'm also a fan of Spring. You reminded me how close it is to coming. I needed that reminder too, because we got saddled with 6-9 inches of snow today and now we're getting hit by an ice storm!!...Come on SPRING!!! :-)
ReplyDeletei will wait too....it's really all we do here. pray for winter to be over and wait....hopefully with patience :)
ReplyDeleteChar this was beautifully written. oh my. love the photo. your spring is usually earlier than here but I am in agreement with your thoughts for sure.,
ReplyDeleteno blues, just looking out the window - wishing and awaiting. hoping and a'dreaming.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written - I can feel the mood and emotion in your yearning for one of the most beautiful of all seasons. Spring - and rebirth.
ReplyDeleteI'll be abiding and awaiting with you.
ReplyDeleteChar- as we await the blizzard which will surely hit and cover us with winter's coat, I dream of spring. I love turning the calendar to see the new month, knowing we're one step closer to seeing if any of the bulbs I planted will really come up!
ReplyDeleteHear, hear!
ReplyDeleteSpring is the best time of the year to live in Alabama. Everything is green. Everything blooms abundantly.
ReplyDeleteThis is so lovely and a nice reminder that winter does not last forever!
ReplyDeleteI felt a shift too...
ReplyDeleteIt's the leaning into the longing for.
I'm looking forward to seeing it through your words and photos,
eyes and soul.
I always enjoy your writing, I followed one of your links to see the course you are following.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post as always.

yep this month we dream of spring and when we get a tease like last weekend of temps in the 70s it's hard not to.
ReplyDeleteSo beautifully written my friend....you've made me really excited about spring when I wasn't even thinking about it...just thinking I hope it doesn't get too warm so that the snow melts and then freezes again...but ahhh...now I'm thinking green grass and buds on the trees...blue skies and sunshine for several hours a day....yep....gonna be good....real good!! :-)
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately February is not the month where things turn the corner here in RI...Maybe March...in the meantime I am hibernating and hunkering down...That photo of lilacs looks like you took it from an old gardening book...Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful thing to read today. I'm shivering in this cold blow that has covered most of Texas. February is normally a dark month in my home, but I know that by mid March, I will be seeing bluebonnets. The count is on! I wait, impatiently.
ReplyDeleteHugs to you Char for brightening my day.
Sharon
Hi Char,
ReplyDeleteSo beautifully written... you have a wonderful gift.
leslie
I envy your February. And your writing skills. :)
ReplyDeleteYour beautiful words gave me hope that there will be a spring, my favorite season.
ReplyDeleteThe freezing rain hitting the windows doesn't sound quite as comforting! :)
I do so love the sound of rain; although, I find the more time marches into spring, the less rain seems less like a refreshing shower, and more like tears.
ReplyDeleteYes, I hear those whispers. I am so ready for the snow to leave. Bring on the spring and summer please. I need green and "warm" sunshine.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, spring--to be intoxicated by the wonder of all the fresh beauty. I can't wait! Hope you're having a good thursday Char!

ReplyDeletethis season will pass and we will be on to the next! it is kind of funny and predictable and comforting how it all works! :)
ReplyDeleteI do love the rain. And the spring. But, I find winter offers many joys as well.
