i abide

it is raining today - much like any february day in alabama.  the rain hits the window pane just over my left shoulder.  i type and listen, it sounds comforting - these last weeks of winter.  wet, gray, dull and mostly lifeless.  the grass is dull and the trees that haven't shed their leaves, hang on to brittle brown skeletons of last year's glory.  but...as the wind blows, the thunder blusters and the rain falls ... this is the time of year that my spirit begins to sigh and whisper - spring is coming, spring is coming.  i pay no attention to groundhog's day - his shadow doesn't seem to work the same way here.  i pay no attention to valentine's day - it holds no meaning for me.  what matters is that february is the month when the seasons begin to turn the corner.  next month comes the beginnings of the earth returning to life - the grass begins to grow, the birds nest, the flowers begin their budding, and the air takes on that magical, pure, spring quality where all possibilities abound.  much like this magical wisteria - it will surround me and intoxicate me.  i await and abide....spring is coming.

  1. You "abide" so poetically too! The wind is blowing and it's cold. And I'm sick and tired of looking outside and seeing things brown and fallen over. I want some spring greens too!

  6. I'm originally from Georgia and am such a fan of Wisteria. I'm also a fan of Spring. You reminded me how close it is to coming. I needed that reminder too, because we got saddled with 6-9 inches of snow today and now we're getting hit by an ice storm!!...Come on SPRING!!! :-)

  11. Char- as we await the blizzard which will surely hit and cover us with winter's coat, I dream of spring. I love turning the calendar to see the new month, knowing we're one step closer to seeing if any of the bulbs I planted will really come up!

  12. Spring is the best time of the year to live in Alabama. Everything is green. Everything blooms abundantly.

  17. So beautifully written my friend....you've made me really excited about spring when I wasn't even thinking about it...just thinking I hope it doesn't get too warm so that the snow melts and then freezes again...but ahhh...now I'm thinking green grass and buds on the trees...blue skies and sunshine for several hours a day....yep....gonna be good....real good!! :-)

  18. Unfortunately February is not the month where things turn the corner here in RI...Maybe March...in the meantime I am hibernating and hunkering down...That photo of lilacs looks like you took it from an old gardening book...Gorgeous!

  19. What a wonderful thing to read today. I'm shivering in this cold blow that has covered most of Texas. February is normally a dark month in my home, but I know that by mid March, I will be seeing bluebonnets. The count is on! I wait, impatiently.

Hugs to you Char for brightening my day.

  22. Your beautiful words gave me hope that there will be a spring, my favorite season.

The freezing rain hitting the windows doesn't sound quite as comforting! :)

  23. I do so love the sound of rain; although, I find the more time marches into spring, the less rain seems less like a refreshing shower, and more like tears.
