emerson defines success as:
:: to laugh often and much;
:: to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
:: to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
:: to appreciate beauty;
::to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
:: to know one life has breathed easier because you lived;
:: this to have succeeded.

i keep this in a frequently used journal as a reminder. i think emerson is pretty much dead on about most of his advice. practical, down to earth and nothing fancy about it.

i've written and erased so much more here. it seems i can't get my head wrapped around it all (in a good way). so i will end on this note.

p.s. i've updated my etsy shop for anyone interested.

  1. Very straight forward reminder!
    Must engraved them in my mind...
    Thanks Char~

  2. Emerson is so very wise. I love this quote, this advice, this definition. I also love that you refer to it often.

  3. I love it, I am going to write it down so I can refer to it. Thanks so much, Have a great day. Take care,

  4. Parts of that remind me of the song Something Worth Leaving Behind by Lee Ann Womack.

    Great things to always have in the back of your mind.

  5. boy, that is one hell of a quote! perfecto!

  6. I have to agree, Emerson usually knew what he was talking about...

  7. I have this hanging on a sign in my house...

    love it love it love it

    live by it live by it live by it

    as much as I can :)

  8. God I lover Emerson...he was an effing genius. I am so unworthy!

  9. Now to have done this "to know one life has breathed easier because you lived" is a great accomplishment!
    Good words!

  10. all true. I don't know how we can claim ignorance, there is so much wisdom all around us..

  11. you know...that is a great reminder...i had it way out of balance and this is so much simpler, success is so hard to define , but he said it well....thanks for this one char

  12. Hello, I really wanted to leave you a comment to say how much I've enjoyed reading your posts. You have some great pictures too.

    Thank you for sharing your writing and pics - very generous !!

  13. this is a wonderful way to start my day, thanks for posting this wonderful insight

  14. I've always loved this quote. I have several friends that consider themselves Intellectuals (with a capital I) yet have no idea how to relate with my son or children in general. And I've always considered that a serious shortcoming. If you can't make a child laugh and share joy with you, you are a real dummy, in my opinion. ;) Great quote, in other words. Sorry for the rambling off topic on Ramblins...

  15. Char please stop by my blog today, something there for you. Thanks

  16. what a sweet reminder. i love it.

  17. Grrr... openID ate my comment! Let me try this again...

    To sum it up, I said: I have to write that list down, it is amazing, thank you for the reminder, sometimes it is hard to keep things in perspective, "to know one life has breathed easier because you lived" wow

  18. That has to be one of my all time favorite quotes. Do you ever watch Wayne Dyer? He was on PBS last night, it was really great!

i feel as if each comment was between us as we sat and sipped something warm....i love to hear what you're thinking.
