new projects

tomorrow i go where i haven't gone in quite a while . . . a needle project. *nervous laugh* i have friends that quilt and have fancy sewing machines. did i confess yet that my mom's best friend 'rescued' my ninth grade home ec fashion show entry so i didn't embarrass myself? yeah. she did. i'm hopeless with sewing machines. oh yes, i was the cross stitch demon back in the day - until i burned myself out. and i needle pointed a pillow while mom was sick - haven't been able to pick it back up. and when i was very young, my grandmother taught me how to embroider on pillow cases and table runners (oh to have those back).

oops - sorry, i'm giving myself a pep talk. i'm joining modern day pioneers' quilting project tomorrow. i know dani is joining in too - any other takers?

because i don't have a machine, she has suggested that i use felt to make handstitching a bit easier. i've picked brown and two shades of blue (to go in my bedroom). keep your fingers crossed for me. i promise to document my progress as i go along.

also, i joined another project - artful penpals. this project, headed by shelagh to bring back the art of letter writing. i mailed off my letter to sara (my penpal) yesterday! shelagh also has a bright and fun etsy shop if you want to check her out.

i feel all crafty today.

  1. Oh how fun! I love the pen pal idea. There is nothing better than getting a handwritten letter in the mail!

  4. Lots of inspiring things going on here today. Love the idea of a group effort to save the lost art of letter writing. It's so wonderful getting that personal note in the mail, opening it at leisure, seeing the handwriting, being connected that way. Kudos to you!

  5. I don't quilt anymore due to arthritis after surgery after a car accident. But I made my fair share by hand stitching, and loved it. I didn't have a sewing machine until after I'd made probably five or so quilts. Then it was a vintage 1951 Singer! I loved stitching by hand because you could sit anywhere and do it. Need any advice on this new endeavor, just email me.

  9. I've done the quilting thing a few years ago. Fun stuff. Now on to the letter writing stuff. I LOVE to write letters and do it quite often. In fact I have a pen pal that I have written to for I think 37 or 38 years now. I should do a blog post on it sometime. Good luck.

  13. Your photo is a nice accessory to your post today. I am taking a quilt class right now that should be fun, but I'm very critical of myself and I can't sew/draw/follow a straight line. You see my dilemma. But I'm game.

I would much prefer to penpal, and shall follow the link and see what it's all about.

Craft away...and keep us posted on your project. All will be well:). Remember, it's not the grade, it's the learning experience (that sounds like something I would have told my students!).

  14. Hmm I can sew a button on and stitch a tear, but that's where I draw the line!

  17. I love your choice of quilt colors, Char!
When I was in my very early 20's, I signed on for a quilting class where I lived, in Amish country Pennsylvania. I loved it. My favorite was the crazy quilt with the feather stitching. I mainly stuck to pillows and gave them as gifts for years to friends and family.
That pen pal idea is a keeper, too.

  19. Yay for crafty days! I'm swimming
in a sea of projects. Today, the lil'
one is feeling lousy and her poor
doll is naked so perhaps today will
be a good day to make doll clothes.
I'll need to check out artful penpals.
    I miss snail mail. :o)
