Spring is like a perhaps hand

~~ e.e. cummings
III

Spring is like a perhaps hand
(which comes carefully
out of Nowhere) arranging
a window,into which people look
(while people stare
arranging and changing placing
carefully there a strange
thing and a known thing here) and

changing everything carefully

spring is like a perhaps
Hand in a window
(carefully to
and fro moving New and
Old things,while
people stare carefully
moving a perhaps
fraction of flower here placing
an inch of air there) and

without breaking anything.

e.e. cummings is a favorite poet of mine, along with W.H. Auden and Emily Dickinson...maybe I could add a few others (Neurada, Rilke). when I was younger I wanted to be a poet. be able to wrap words up in pretty and descriptive packages...but I never liked my poetry. then I wanted to write the great american novel when I was a senior in high school - however, my version of the world consisted of either reading list books such as Little Women, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Secret Garden...or Harlequin romances. Neither was a world vision.

so, I just get to sit and savor beautiful words. I cannot duplicate their beauty by my writing - I only try to pay tribute with my photography.

  1. I love cummings. And Neruda, Rilke, Machado, Lorca, Akmatova, Mary Oliver, and, especially Rumi. Spring is just right for poetry.

  21. I love e.e. cummings but the first time I came across him I thought something was really wrong with him, he did not live in a poetry box, so to speak. Now that is the whole reason I love it.

Love the post below. It is so good to remember our loved ones.

  22. Just when I think I don't have the patience or appreciation for poetry, I read some special poem like this and wonder why I don't read poetry all the time.

We had a spring day like this a few days ago. The rain is back now but I'm hoping it will feel like this again tomorrow.

    Lovely post.
