a sad realization about myself...confessions of a sam's clubber

i have a confession. i'm a secret hoarder. *hangs head* not the scary kind like they have on television these days (don't run and sell me out now) but the kind that has to have ten cans of ro-tel tomatoes and five packs of chili mix in her cabinets. yeah.

i realized how bad it has become this weekend when i went to sam's with my brother and i put a case of ro-tel tomatoes in the cart. he looked at me and said, 'you know we have about four cans at the house, right?' i blinked. nooooooooooo, we couldn't. (turns out he was right)

but it seems i only pick certain items to hoard: french's brown gravy mix (yes, i can make my own gravy but this is hold over from my childhood - think of it as my blue box mac & cheese), ro-tel tomatoes, tomato paste, canned corn (another childhood thing when corn was about the only veggie i would eat), cream of mushroom soup, and taco seasoning.

so, if you come to my house on any given day...i can make you either spaghetti, tacos or the best green bean and corn casserole you ever ate. just sayin'

  4. well, you could hoard worse things. i wouldn't call this hoarding, but preparing for a party. plus, if the aliens are right and the world ends in 2010, then when the aliens come back to the earth, they will be able to make lots of good food!

  5. I agree with Dani - there are certainly worse things to hoard.

Hoard, by the way, is one of my 8 year old's spelling words this week, and we were just talking about the definition of it last night!

We used to make fun of my mom as she always had 4 bottles of worchestershire sauce in her cabinet. We said she would be ready to season everyone's food in case of a nuclear war!

  9. I have 5 boxes of confectioners sugar in my pantry...I bought it for making gingerbread houses, but my DIL brought some with her. I won't use it until next Christmas. I always have stuff to make tacos, spaghetti and black bean soup. Those are my staples.

  10. Oh I miss Sam's Club...uff..they have something similar to Sam's in Trondheim (about 6 hours north of us) but nothing around here and the prices are NO where close to Sam's..so if I lived in the states I'd probably be a hoarder like you as well..always worried I won't have things I need when I need them...I think I have like a million packets of yeast- never know when you want to make bread or something and it would drive me nuts not having what I needed when I needed it...
Oh and ro-tel tomatoes..uff...I'm homesick now..

  11. LOL Relyn - the casserole is so easy (and probably so bad for you)

    1 can green beans (frenched)
    1 can white corn
1 can cream of mushroom soup
    1 cup cheddar shreds

    mix together

    put in a casserole dish

crush fried onions and toss with 1 cup cheddar. cover bean mixture.

    bake at 350 until bubbly.

  12. Plus you can't beat the fact that on many given days you can go there and practically lunch on the samples!!!

  13. I admitted to my husband the other day: "Ya know, my daughters stock up on Charmin (the big roll) when they know I'm coming. And one of the first things they say to me upon arrival is: Mom, there are lots of rolls of toilet paper on the shelf." He admitted that yes, I do have some fascination/fear of not having Charmin toilet paper. I pack it into the cabinets. And feel almost elated when I stand back and see all those nice neat rows of white. Do you think I'm a hoarder? Or, possibly I have this deep-seated memory of having not been able to wipe adequately!

  14. LOL...thanks for the chuckle! Thank God you are not like the ones on TV...O MY!
It's just good to have these things on hand! My things are canned petite tomatoes, taco seasoning in the shaker container, creamed mushroom and chicken soups, and anything I can freeze for later. :)
Having baked spaghetti tonight with fresh bread! Hey don't call it hoarding call it smart shopping!

  15. Oh I hear you on this one. I don't know why, but I always have a few too many cans of tomato paste and the whole peeled tomatoes. I think it's because I use them for different dishes. Sauce, soup, sausage and peppers (and tomatoes), or maybe it's just the comfort of meal possibility looking in that cupboard. Sigh.

  16. well at the very least you will always have the makings of a good meal!

  17. LOL! I buy the same things when I go to Sam's! I use lots of tomato paste! When I go to Trader Joe's, I buy tons of black beans and garbanzo beans. I can always make black bean soup and hummus!

Quick recipe for black bean soup:

3 cans black beans, 1 drained, the rest with their liquid

    1 can Rotel

    You got yourself soup!!

  18. What is it about certain things in the cupboard? For me it was boxes of couscous and long-grain rice--just in case I needed a side dish I guess. Makes no sense and I finally broke myself of the habit. Now it's just pasta in every shape, size, and make (rice, wheat, and the regular kind). Anyway, I would be happy to have a taco with you :)

  19. I'm one of those just-in-case people. I have to buy next bottle of (insert anything here) before the current one runs out.

  20. hahaha! well, you are a selective hoarder, so that isn't so bad!

  21. heck...even if that's all you can make on short notice, I'd still stop by and say, "hey"

I hoard chips, feta cheese, shredded cheese, petite cut canned tomatoes, thin spaghetti noodles and french vanilla creamer.....

I'm sure I could keep the family fed for a few days on just those items....they'd be frowning, but we'd all live.

  22. oh no I do the same thing my biggy hoard item Paul Newmans Ranch dressing at any given time I will have at least 3 or 4 why? I have no idea.

  23. My huge container of dishwasher detergent lasted from 1/9/09 to 1/4/10... guess if I'd bought small ones I'd have been a "hoarder" too. Gotta love Sam's! Have you tried the Pillsbury Cinnabon sweet rolls? Yum!

  24. i hoard canned chickpeas (can make so much with that!), canned corn (the kids love it in any dish), and chillies.

  25. i wonder if there is an opposite to a hoarder because if there is i think i might be it. ironically my husband is a hoarder. so he holds onto everything i throw everything away.

  26. i get nervous if i'm down to less than a dozen rolls of toilet paper.

oh and eggs, there has to be a dozen eggs in the fridge at all times too. if there's not, i buy more. you never know when you'll want to make an omelette and a martha stewart cake on the same day and then bam, all those eggs are gone..

  27. I think a lot of people do this. I know I do!

  28. As SOON as I saw the word hoarders, the A&E show popped into my head and
all I could say was "NOOO! NO CHAR!!" Ha ha! There's nothing wrong with hoarding edible, non-perishable food items in your pantry. It's when you start hoarding the non-edible, perished last summer food items that you'll need to change your name! ;oP
