bitty bits and pieces

it was a good day. did you have a good day too?

i'm e.x.h.a.u.s.t.e.d in the very best of ways - the kind where you know that you did a good job. i like that. i work for the state medicaid agency and am working on a new initiatives on electronic health information exchange. today was the kick off - something i've been working toward since i started the job. it feels good to finally 'start'.

what else? i cooked a bit this weekend (as you saw) so today i'm enjoying leftovers. aren't leftovers great on a day like this?

i'm reading an article on 'secrets to a happy marriage' and smiled at this cute couple who said, '...we tolerate and accept every part of each other's personalities. that, and i let her go shopping.' adorable, right? but the word 'tolerance' - in light of the holiday yesterday, it amazes me still how many people are still so intolerant of others. skin, religion, size, wealth....and there are many more dividers. what would happen this week if we all tore down at least one barrier that we have. it would be beautiful. content of character....that's where it's at baby.

i'm always inspired by real simple - if you have read me any length of time, you've probably figured that out by now....and how they find new uses for everyday stuff (this month it's a tennis ball). do you do that - what's a new use for something you have around the house. and don't give me canning jars for vases (hahaha) because i do that already. my favorite is using a dryer sheet to 'unstatic' my hair in the winter.

  1. Electronic health information seems like an interesting concept, as long as it's done well and the information is secure. Best of luck with your project.

  3. I completely agree with you about the barriers....oh how I agree with you sooooo very very much !

I use one of the spice cabinets in my kitchen for my little bottles of craft paints....does that count as an answer to your question, or just prove that I really don't like to cook......heee heeee

  4. It sounds like it was, indeed, a great day! I like Real Simple, too, but I haven't checked out the tennis ball article yet. Will definitely do that tomorrow. I love repurposing things. My whole house seems repurposed. I use a former bedroom dresser for office supplies and paper, cigar boxes for craft supplies, a beautiful old corbel to hold up a heavy window that won't stay up on its own . . . the list goes on and on.

I do that dryer sheet trick, too! It works!

    xoxo Gigi

  5. I don't like the word tolerance. It implies that I am putting up with something I find wrong or distasteful etc.
Acceptance is a little better, but it still sounds off to me.
To be honest, I have no word to replace either of those. I guess I don't think there needs to be a word. People are just people, and none is more entitled than any other.

  8. I'll have to try the dryer sheets on the kids. Their hair is always flying.

  10. dryer sheets to unstatic your hair... that's brilliant!
i put lotion on my hands and run it through my hair before it dries to keep the static at bay, personally.

i used pages from old calendars and magazines to wrap gifts (small ones) or to make funky envelopes...

  11. If I'm wearing a long skirt, I'll run the dryer sheet over that, too, to stop the clinging.

  12. Barriers~I think it is the one time we should be color-blind!!
No one is more special than the other, no one gets special treatment because of the color, no one gets a holiday or a month, no one gets a t-shirt or a coin with their face on it, no one gets more than the other. We are all just people, living the same space. We should just love one another......and do it equally!

  15. I love Real Simple and their ideas, I use them all the time. I am considering unsubscribing to them though as we need to tighten our belts.

  16. I have naturally curly, wavy longish hair. The dryer sheet idea is fantastic! Must try. I like simple thinbgs too. All done with the effort of Martha Stewart!

  17. The dryer cloth is a great trip. I'm going to try it. This static cling is making me crazy. I'm glad you are having a good day. I'm a little of the opposite but that's okay. I'm sure I'll be okay tomorrow:)

  18. it is so true that we must tolerate many activities/proclivities of those that we love. and with any luck, they do the same with us! :)

  19. I'm so glad you had a good day! Love your beautiful image, and I quite agree about tearing down the barriers. Tolerance is a good start but really loving one another -- giving of ourselves to make someone else's life better -- is the ideal. :)

  20. Oh, I love Real Simple, too. But, mostly what I wanted to say, was, "YES!" I'm so happy for you. For your delicious kind of tired. For your job well done. For your job in general. YES!

  21. I keep a tennis ball on my dryer for fluffing up down coats and vests in the dryer. It redistributes the down. The used dryer sheets are great for swiping the lint filter. Saves picking off the stubborn lint. Also, suck one up in your vacuum cleaner and it will smell better when you're running it.

Your work project sounds fascinating and so fulfilling! Something that is desperately needed in this country.

  23. I hope things continue to go well for you at work. This is more a remedy from the farmer's almanac, but once I spilled chocolate on a white shirt and I found out that if I use dish soap on the stain it comes out with no fuss.

  24. Nothing like a great day at work followed by good leftovers and a good magazine:)...that is my favorite part of that magazine too...everyone is so creative with simple things...unlike me...I do use old vases to hold pens, pencils, kitchen utensils, bathroom supplies....not all in the same vase of course:)

  25. I too agree about the barriers. I have a dryer sheet suggestion too. If you have pups/dogs or even cats use a clean dryer sheet on them to help keep away flies and nats. Be careful not to get it in their eyes, mouth or nose. Also makes them smell nice.

    Have a wonderful day!
