comfort (30/30)

as i sit in my office on the last day of this month of gratitude the i-pod is playing the dixie chick's cover of "landslide" and the wind is blowing blustery last gasps of fall weather.  the colored leaves have about disappeared and we're left with the stragglers that are quickly fading away into browns and grays.  where our northern friends have beautiful fluffy blankets of white - we here are faced with the browns, taupes and grays of winter.  christmas is in 25 days and the new year is in 31.  overwhelming in many ways.

of all the seasons, winter is not my favorite...it's cold and damp and though i love that the coldness allows the flowers to bloom in the spring and takes care of a rather large bug population, it leaves me feeling a bit isolated and alone.  but maybe that is its purpose - to allow us to feel those feelings so when we are with friends and family that we appreciate their company?  i tend to think in looking at both sides of the coin, the half full, yet half empty glass.  i'm not so much oppotomistic as i'm practical and firmly convinced that worry will not change anything.

i wanted a big bang to finish up this month...but it seems that i'm going with a whimper - - - sorta.  so as the fall slips into winter and november slips into december, i will remember too that all downs are accompanied by ups.  today i'm grateful for warm beds, good coffee and things that comfort.

today's gratitude - on this day, i'm grateful for blankets, wooly socks, coffee and tea, comfort, beds with fluffy comforters and soft pillows.  i'm grateful big picture windows that allow me to see the beauty that surrounds me, even when it's gray and brown.  and i'm grateful that i know cold winds will bring bright sunshine and warm weather in the spring.

today on my i-pod - landslide (dixie chicks cover), thank you (dido), i feel the earth move (carole king), have i told you lately (van morrision), champagne supernova (oasis), i wonder (chris isaak)

  2. Comfort is an easy thing to forget to be grateful for; getting cozy is my favorite thing to do! There are so many people in so many places that don't have the circumstances to allow them to curl up in a warm bed, with cozy PJ's and a hot cup of tea. Great way to end the month of gratitude, Char!

and can you believe that it is still only brown and grey here ? we have missed all the snow so far as it falls north of us and west of us....and i am not complaining at all....i don't need any white until christmas and then by new years i'm ready for blossoms and blooms...a winter girl i'm not :)

I love the winter...tho I am ready for spring when it comes...I need the time to regenerate I guess:) I love the muted colors of November and early December too...

  6. Having a stay in pj's with coffee and old movies kind of day/s. I have learned when these feelings hit to go with them, and the brighter days seem to come sooner. I have shut off the phone and will shut down here soon. I have two novels calling to me and I'll come back up for air on Wednesday.

I adore winter here, such a respite from far too much sunlight for me. (Of course I do not have to shovel snow)

  7. You should try a winter up north - you'll have a whole new appreciation for winter in the south!

  8. ah... such a good reflection.

we are getting rain again, after our first snow, but that's okay. I'm certain there is plenty ahead.

I'm not the biggest fan of winter either.

  13. What a beautiful month of posts, Char! It is pouring rain here today, but at least it's 60 degrees and not 37... lol I have just put up a little tree with twinkling lights on the back porch, where I can see it as I stand at the kitchen sink. Another reminder of light and life and warmth in this dark season -- a blessing for sure. :)

  14. You know what else cold weather brings...February skies so blue they need to invent a new name to describe them and night skies so clear the twinkling of the stars is bright even in the nighttime lights of the city.

  15. the seasons don't normally vary dramatically where i live, but it has been EXCEPTIONALLy cold the last week or so. BURR! i am very thankful to have a home and a bed to keep me out of that bone chilling cold! maybe the best thing about winter is being able to cozy up.

  22. Somehow I keep missing your blog and realized I've not been a 'follower'!! I've corrected that, and have gone back to enjoy all the lovely images you've posted in the past month. They are all so beautiful and inspiring. You are truly a gifted and creative photographer and I'll be sure and visit you more regularly now, and I invite you to visit me too! P.S. I have enjoyed reading your thoughts on today's post.
